Question of the Day: Day 120

Have you ever been stuck in a "rut" and been so comfortable that you had trouble leaving it?
What did you end up doing or are you STILL stuck in the rut?
Stuck in a rut = to do the same things all the time so that you become bored, or to be in a situation where it is impossible to make progress.

I was stuck in a rut - bad marriage - for 10 years after I knew it was not working. I stayed because I was comfortable with a lot of things, my family expected me to be "The one who didn't get divorced.", and I thought my kids needed us to stay together. I abused drugs and worked 60-80 hours per week to keep myself from facing the truth - when I quit, everything disintegrated around me - I lost my mind for awhile. 4 years later, my kids, me, my X, are all happier healthier people because we quit living in the complacent rut - where problems were ignored, and the only thing that changed was the amount of renentment that was building up toward ourselves, each other, and the situation in general.

I get into mini-ruts now & again - and I find, if I can take a walk, get out of the house, even play my guitar uninterrupted for awhile, I feel better and can pull myself out of it.

Yes, I have & when I did something different, I discovered the truth.

My marriage had become like that a few years before I actually left it but there were also lots of factors involved there that played a part in making the "rut" seem like the least harmful alternative to breaking up the family unit and disrupting my kids.

I finally had some encouragement to make decisions and once I did, I was relieved and able to move on.
