Question of the Day: Day 162

If you grew up in an environment, that included what you thought were inappropriate behaviors by your parents, what can you do to make sure that you won't continue those same behaviors?

I think by taking an honest look at family dysfunction, and realizing that while becoming a parent does change a person in many ways, it does not make them any less human. I assume that most people do their best based on what they know... sometimes, their knowledge is, for whatever reasons, limited.
I think that remembering how certain behaviors made you feel as a child & realizing the "toll" it took on the person(s) demonstrating the behavior(s), we will be inclined to seek & consider other~ hopefully, more healthy ways of coping.

Well, I had to deal with a lot of physical punishments that went far beyond anything considered "ok" by anyone's standards and I make dang sure that I take some space before I talk to my sons when they are in trouble.

That is one cycle that will NOT continue with me.
