Is it okay to say something mean or offensive if you say that you are "just kidding" when you are done?

We are looking for answers to some hard questions as we dig deep inside and explore our own core values and how that guides not just our own lives but the very world that we live in. These questions will be asked to a group of high school students but we would also like to hear from the world at large. While we hope to keep this forum wide open we do reserve the right to delete responses that we find to be offensive or combative in nature. Thank you for participating with us.

i think it is ok when you are with friends and they know you are kidding but when you are just talking to some one it will hurt them even if you say you are kidding cause they dont know better
No. It is not okay at all.
Meanness is still meanness no matter how you dress it up with words after the fact.
By disrespecting another person with cruelty, you are also disrespecting yourself in the process.
If you dont mean it, and those around know you dont mean it its fine. So if you pretend to be all redneck and racist thats fine if everyone knows (perhaps you are putting on a funny accent too)...but if there is someone in a corner who doesn't get it you shouldn't be doing it,
In Oklahoma, we do it another way. You can be as mean and offensive and horrible as you want to be when talking about someone, so long as you say, "...bless her heart." when you're done.
Example: "That Suzie is a mean, rotten, non-showering, three-tooth-havin' monster... bless her heart."
See? It works!
you should not say it if it's offensive. And friends would not say mean things to another friend and just be joking.It's just a wrong thing to do if your just joking.

i think its ok if your friends are there cuz they no ya well enough to no if your kidn. so if its a difrent then i say no it aint right.
