Question of the Day: Day 323

Do you think that The United States Government should be more stringent about, or helpful to immigrants? Why? If you know, & are living in the U.S. - under what circumstances did your family come to America?

The US have not shut its door but remained open to "legal" immigration.

Just last year, there were British, German, African, and Chinese citizens who took their oath as American citizens.

US embassies all around the world are still entertaining applications for immigration.

Recently, it was reported that a group of African and Cambodian refugees from their respective war-torn countries are coming to America.

The US is still the "land of milk and honey" to non-Americans. So, I expect more Asians, Hispanics, Europeans, and Africans coming to America in the years to come.

I've heard such differing views on the subject. Some look at it from a business/economic perspective- with some focusing on how it affects those native to this country (believing that Americans lose jobs & are deprived of government assistance)- while others focus on how it affects those immigrating, economically (the opportunities & dream of America). Some considering the harsh living conditions (oppressions) other than economic ones which some are fleeing from. Some have voiced upset about, while others commend the government for accommodating language barriers.

It's been said that, "There is one race; the human race."

The vast majority of us don't have to go back very many generations to find someone who came here from another country. The US is truly the land of opportunity. But the big issue now is illegal immigration - those who sneak into the country illegally. I can't think of another country that is so accommodating to illegal immigrants - they receive free medical care, schools cater to them by teaching alternate languages, and any offspring are immediately citizens. Most countries deport illegals. I think we need a balance - we need a good guest-worker program which allows people to come and be productive which is good for everybody. But we also need to resist the uncontrolled incursion of people who have no intention of joining the melting pot of American society but instead wish to just occupy portions of our land.
